Born on 25th November 1948 as the eldest son of the illustrious former Dharmadhikari Sri Rathnavarma Heggade and Smt. Rathnamma, young Veerendra ascended the sacred seat of Dharmadhikari of Shri Kshethra Dharmasthala in the year 1968 at the remarkably young age of twenty. What began as a sacred responsibility evolved into an extraordinary lifetime mission of spiritual guidance, social empowerment, rural transformation, cultural preservation, and humanitarian service.
For decades, Dr. Heggade has remained a keen student of humanity, deeply understanding the complexities of human emotions, social realities, and the spiritual aspirations of people. Thousands of devotees and visitors who arrive at Dharmasthala seeking solace, guidance, and hope continue to find comfort in his wisdom, humility, and compassionate counsel.
Dr. Heggade is married to Hemavathi V. Heggade, herself deeply committed to social service, particularly in the area of women empowerment. The couple are blessed with their daughter Shraddha Amith, married to businessman Mr. Amith of Bengaluru. Their granddaughter Manya holds a special place in Dr. Heggade’s heart.
Even at the age of 78, Dr. Veerendra Heggade continues to work with the energy, enthusiasm, and dedication of a young visionary, devoting nearly eighteen hours a day to public service and institution building. New ideas for societal development, rural upliftment, education, healthcare, sustainability, and community welfare continue to emerge from his ever-active and compassionate mind. • Architect of Modern Dharmasthala:
Dr. Veerendra Heggade has masterfully blended spirituality with modern administration, creating a unique model where devotion coexists with progressive development. As the Dharmadhikari of Shri Kshethra Dharmasthala, he has transformed the once modest pilgrim village into a globally respected spiritual, cultural, and humanitarian centre.
Under his visionary leadership, the temple administration and pilgrim care systems were modernized with remarkable efficiency while preserving the sanctity and traditional ethos of the sacred institution. Today, Dharmasthala shines as one of Karnataka’s brightest spiritual landmarks.
Dharmasthala is the divine abode of Lord Shri Manjunatha Swamy. Alongside the ancient Shri Chandranatha Swamy Basadi stands the majestic 39-foot monolithic statue of Bhagwan Bahubali, installed in 1982 under Dr. Heggade’s leadership — a monumental achievement that earned him the revered title of “Abhinava Chavundaraya.”
The infrastructure developed under his stewardship provides quality accommodation to nearly 25,000 devotees every day. The magnificent Annapoorna Dining Hall, dedicated to society in 1981, can serve meals to 5,000 devotees simultaneously, while the modern hygienic kitchen efficiently serves up to 60,000 people daily and is celebrated for its cleanliness, discipline, and service.
• Compassionate Social Reformer:
Dr. Heggade has always remained deeply connected to ordinary people. He personally meets devotees and citizens daily, patiently listening to their grievances, resolving disputes, offering guidance, and extending direct assistance wherever needed. His humanitarian approach transcends barriers of caste, creed, religion, and social status.
He has also organized several landmark public programmes including Kannada Sahithya Sammelana, Tulu Sammelana, Kissan Melas, and various cultural, literary, and agricultural conventions with exceptional vision and organizational excellence.
• Guardian of Heritage and Culture:
A passionate admirer of ancient Indian architecture, heritage, and culture, Dr. Heggade established the S.D.M. Dharmothana Trust to restore and preserve historical temples and monuments across Karnataka. Through this initiative, more than 283 temples and Jain Basadis have been restored to their original glory.
Dharmasthala today houses remarkable museums preserving India’s priceless heritage. The renowned “Manjusha Museum” showcases rare antiques, manuscripts, artifacts, and cultural treasures from India and abroad. The celebrated Vintage Car Museum promoted by
Dr. Heggade one at Dharmasthala and another one at Srirangapatna near Msysore remains a major attraction for automobile enthusiasts and heritage lovers alike.
A keen photographer himself, Dr. Heggade possesses a refined artistic sensibility that reflects in every cultural initiative undertaken under his guidance.
• Institutionalizing Charity Through Service:
Dr. Veerendra Heggade has transformed charity into a structured and sustainable movement through the establishment of several world-renowned institutions dedicated to education, healthcare, rural development, spirituality, environment, entrepreneurship and social welfare.
• Educational Revolution:
The SDM Educational Society and SDM Educational Trust, under his leadership, manage a vast network of institutions including colleges of Ayurveda, Naturopathy, Engineering, Dentistry, Medicine, Law, Management and various general degree programmes.
These institutions are recognized not merely for academic excellence, but also for value-based education rooted in ethics, discipline, compassion and national service.
• Pioneer of Mass Marriage Movement:
One of Dr. Heggade’s most impactful social reforms was the introduction of the historic mass marriage programme in 1971. Conceived to eradicate social evils such as dowry, extravagant wedding expenditure, and financial exploitation of poor families, this noble initiative has transformed thousands of lives.
Conducted completely free of cost under the auspices of Dharmasthala, the programme has successfully united more than 13,100 couples in marriage with dignity and simplicity. Today, this visionary initiative is replicated across Karnataka and beyond.
• RUDSETI – A National Model of Rural Empowerment:
The establishment of RUDSETI in 1982 stands as one of Dr. Heggade’s most revolutionary contributions to rural India.
Founded jointly with Syndicate Bank and Canara Bank, the Rural Development and Self Employment Training Institute was envisioned to empower unemployed rural youth through skill development, entrepreneurship training, and self-employment opportunities.
The success of the RUDSETI model inspired the Ministry of Ruaral Development, Government of India to establish similar institutes in the name of RSETIs across the country. Today, more than 630 institutes function nationwide on the RUDSETI model, training lakhs of unemployed youth annually. National Academy of RUDSETi which is the premier Institute in the filed of entrepreneurship is recognised as an apex Institute which provides training to the Directors and Faculty members of RUDSETI / RSETI.
• SKDRDP – Transforming Rural Karnataka:
The Shri Kshethra Dharmasthala Rural Development Project (SKDRDP), initiated in 1982, has emerged as one of India’s largest and most successful rural development movements.
Functioning across all 32 districts of Karnataka and Kasaragod district of Kerala, SKDRDP has mobilized nearly 5.3 million families into 6,41,759 Self-Help Groups, creating a massive rural empowerment network.
With cumulative savings exceeding ₹4,112 crores and loan transactions surpassing ₹1,31,994 crores, the initiative has revolutionized microfinance, women empowerment, sanitation, housing, sustainable energy, health insurance, agriculture, and livelihood generation in rural India.
• Champion of Sustainable Energy and Environmental Stewardship:
Dr. Heggade has consistently championed sustainable living and renewable energy initiatives long before environmental awareness became mainstream.
Dharmasthala’s guest houses utilize solar water heating systems generating nearly 1,25,000 litres of hot water daily. Solar-powered street lighting illuminates the town, while giant biogas plants supply fuel to the temple kitchens.
Through SKDRDP, over 4,34,414 rural families have acquired sustainable energy assets through microcredit initiatives, significantly improving environmental sustainability and rural living standards.
• Crusader Against Alcoholism:
Recognizing alcoholism as one of the greatest threats to poor families and rural society, Dr. Heggade initiated the powerful social movement “Janajagruthi.”
Through scientific de-addiction camps, awareness campaigns, counselling, and rehabilitation efforts, thousands of individuals have overcome alcohol addiction and rebuilt stable, dignified family lives.
